Job Description

Founded in 2005, Value Partners Investments (VPI) is a Winnipeg-based investment firm that currently manages over $4.7 Billion in assets primarily through nine investment funds (the “Pools”) that are distributed through investment dealers and mutual fund dealers, as well as an investment counsel service which provides discretionary management services to high-net-worth focused financial planners and wealthy families across Canada.

Job Description

Reporting to Darrin Erickson, Portfolio Manager, the Global Equity Trader/Research Analyst is responsible for the following:

Responsibilities

  • Trade execution and settlement (25%)
    • Primary responsibility for trade execution including equity (long/short), ETF (short), options (put/call), and FX trades through Bloomberg.

- Monitor complete trade lifecycle to ensure timely trade settlement; facilitated by ongoing communication within broker/dealer network, custodian (Global Equity and Income Pool trades) and prime broker (Special Opportunities Pool trades).

  • Fund administration (15%)
    • Manually input daily Global Equity, Income, Sustainability Leaders, Special Opportunities Pool equity, option and currency positions within an internal Excel-based portfolio management model.

- Reflect daily cash positions (factoring in pending transactions).

  • Analysis and reporting of quarterly earnings (15%)
    • Generate quarterly earnings summaries and financial model output for Global Equity, Income Pool, and Sustainability Leaders holdings.

- Produce written summaries based on company-specific performance, illustrating key performance drivers and determine whether action is required based on the reported results (i.e., buy, sell or hold recommendation).

  • Pool presentation & marketing material content creation (20%)
    • Support content creation for quarterly newsletters, buy/sell notifications, update videos and Investment Committee presentations.

- Generate slide deck content based on pool-level and security-level data.

  • Update recurring marketing materials in a timely manner.

- Provide the Marketing Department with company-specific information as requested.

  • Other ad hoc requests.
  • Research and analysis of equity securities and industries (25%)
    • Provide daily pool holding oversight within the Global Equity, Income and Special Opportunities Pool.

- Actively monitor company fundamentals, sector and broad market news flow along with technical indicators.

  • Generate equity (long/short) and ETF (short) investment ideas using fundamental research.

- Fundamental research is executed via internal research (including financial statement analysis) in conjunction with examination of sell-side coverage.

  • Track economic fundamentals across investable countries.
  • Produce written reports as requested.

- Formulate reports on pool holdings, prospective investments, and or investment-related macro-economic events.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field (Finance, Economics, Accounting, etc.).
  • CFA designation or enrolled in the CFA program.
  • Investment industry experience preferred but not required.

Technical Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of fundamental equity analysis and valuation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel required, proficiency in PowerPoint, Word, and Teams preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Bloomberg and S&P Capital IQ functionality preferred.
