As we continue to scale, we are on the hunt for a Controller who will be pivotal in shaping our finance department. This individual will play a critical role in steering Passage towards achieving its financial and operational goals.

It's important to note that we maintain an in-office working policy, and we require candidates to either reside in Toronto or be open to relocating to the area and committing to a five-day-a-week in-office schedule.

Role Summary

The Controller at Passage will be the financial steward of the company. Tasked with the accountability of financial reporting, the Controller will oversee the preparation of periodic financial statements, ensure the accuracy and timeliness of all reports, and maintain a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk and enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results.

This role demands a strategic thinker with a meticulous eye for detail and a strong grasp of financial principles to manage our finance team. The Controller will ensure that Passage operates at the highest levels of financial integrity and compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting operations including Treasury, Tax, AR/AP, Structuring and Revenue Recognition.
  • Coordinate and direct the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts, report variances, and prepare the periodic financial statements.
  • Manage and comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
  • Implement and manage financial controls in alignment with the company’s operating model.
  • Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.
  • Manage and oversee the finance team, fostering an environment of continuous improvement.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to assist with financial and budgeting strategies.
  • Analyze company's financial results with respect to profits, trends, costs, and compliance with budgets. Issue regular status and ad hoc reports to senior management.
  • Coordinate annual audits with external auditors to ensure compliance and transparency in financial reporting.
  • Proven working experience as a Financial Controller.
  • 5+ years minimum combined accounting and finance experience.
  • Advanced degree in Accounting. CPA or CMA required.
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures with a strong preference for those with deep experience in Lending and Accounts Payable.
  • Experience with preparing financial statements.
  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process.
  • Excellent accounting software user and administration skills, with the ability to manage and set up required financial infrastructure and systems.
  • Capable of working collaboratively across departmental functions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to present financial data using detailed reports and charts.
  • Demonstrable strategic thinking skills.
