Financial Controller

Join a Development company based out of Abbotsford, BC.

About the Company:

Our client is a real estate centered investment company specializing in multi-family properties, market condos, and rental apartments in British Columbia.

Role Overview:

This role is primarily responsible for overseeing and managing all accounting operational functions within the organization. This includes tasks such as coordinating payables and receivables, conducting bank reconciliations, and managing month-end closing procedures. Additionally, the role involves preparing and coordinating both internal and external financial reporting. The individual in this role also plays a key part in managing the budget process, evaluating accounting systems for improvement, ensuring regulatory compliance including tax planning and filings, and overseeing treasury management activities such as preparing loan draws and monitoring cash flows. Moreover, responsibilities extend to hiring, training, and retaining accounting staff, as well as handling payroll and benefits administration.

Key Responsibilities:

Planning, directing, and coordinating all accounting operational functions

  • Oversee payables and receivables
  • Bank reconciliations
  • Month end close
  • Reconcile intercompany accounts
  • Annual CAM reconciliations

Coordinating and preparing internal and external financial reporting

  • Monthly internal job cost reporting
  • Quarterly internal proforma reporting
  • Prepare interim financial reporting as required
  • Manage process of quarterly project investor reporting

Coordinating activities of external auditors

  • Prepare year end working papers
  • Annual review engagement

Providing management with information vital to the decision-making process

  • Support proforma preparation and review
  • Monthly job cost analysis

Managing the budget process

  • Annual overhead budget for parent company

Regulatory Management

  • Overseeing regulatory reporting, frequently including tax planning and compliance
  • Filing Spec Tax, Empty Homes Tax, Under-Used Housing Tax, T5s, T5018s, T2s, T5013s, WCB returns, GST returns, T3 returns

Human Resources

  • Payroll and benefits administration
  • Hiring, training and retaining skilled accounting staff
  • Semi-monthly payroll for hourly and salaried staff
  • Preparation of T4s and ROEs

Treasury management

  • Prepare monthly loan draws
  • Monthly project and corporate cash flows
  • Monitor balances and surplus cash
  • Support new loan acquisitions and lender reporting

Qualifications:

  • University degree in accounting or finance
  • CPA certification
  • Proficient in ASPE with strong technical accounting skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-directed and motivated
  • Minimum two years controllership/management experience
  • Real estate / construction experience preferred
  • Public accounting experience an asset

Compensation:

CA$105,000/yr - CA$140,000/yr depending on experience.

Location of Employment:

This is an in-office role. The controller will be based in Abbotsford, British Columbia.
