Job Description

Our client is a renowned and well respected insurer in the industry, seeking an Executive Underwriter to join the team! The Executive Underwriter is responsible for servicing and underwriting complex accounts within a large portfolio of national and/or multinational accounts.

Ideally you are a creative and innovative problem solver who has a strong foundation of expertise to draw from and you enjoy mentoring the more junior staff members on the team.

** This role is to be based in Vancouver, but we can consider someone to be based out of the Calgary office**

Responsibilities include:

Managing a profitable book of business within established guidelines and authority. Key duties include:

  • Underwriting Management: Evaluate, select, negotiate, and price policies to ensure profitability. Monitor endorsements, renewals, and cancellations. Analyze new business for risk profitability.
  • Risk Assessment and Monitoring: Analyze trends and developments in loss ratios and risk trends. Implement best business practices for compliance and internal controls.
  • Information Systems and Process Improvement: Maintain knowledge of underwriting systems, recommend process improvements, and analyze data quality.
  • Business Development: Identify and pursue new business opportunities. Develop professional relationships with brokers and customers to enhance business retention and customer satisfaction.
  • Sales and Negotiation: Collaborate with brokers/customers on pricing and risk factors. Educate brokers on underwriting philosophy and procedures.
  • Coaching and Mentoring: Mentor less experienced underwriters, provide technical guidance, and support training and development initiatives.
  • Operational Leadership: Provide input on underwriting strategies, guidelines, and product development. Consult on policy wording changes and assist in strategic planning.

Requirements:

  • Post-secondary school education and/or equivalent on the job experience.
  • Completion of the CIP and/or FCIP designation.
  • Minimum 10 years experience in the (commercial) property and casualty industry – at least 4 years in the middle market space and at least 8 years in commercial underwriting
  • Tech savvy and able to navigate MS office well!
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of underwriting discipline and pricing models.
  • Be ok with a mandated hybrid work set up (even split from office and home).
