The Opportunity:

Our team in Ontario currently has an opportunity for an Environmental Manager or Environmental Director with a minimum of 8 years of specific expertise conducting construction phase environmental management for transportation projects. You will have experience working on Design-Build (DB), Progressive DB, Alternative Financing and Procurement (AFP), and/or Public-Private Partnership (P3) Projects for federal, provincial or municipal governments and/or transit agencies. You will utilize your knowledge of various environmental disciplines and understanding of project agreements and contracts to work collaboratively with our clients to ensure that construction activities align with environmental regulations and sustainability goals. You will be a member of a supportive team of environmental specialists dedicated to excellence and client service.

What you can expect to do here:

  • You will serve as Environmental Manager or Environmental Director on transportation sector project bid and execution teams.
  • You will lead and coordinate Environmental Discipline Teams on proposals, bids and project delivery associated with transit infrastructure projects.
  • You will lead meetings with project stakeholders, as well as Environmental Working Group Meetings with the client as well as design and construction teams.
  • You will collaborate with internal engineering and environmental technical discipline leads, technical staff and sub-consultants for the timely execution of study deliverables and preparation of documentation required to compliantly meet projects’ environmental management requirements.
  • You will establish and maintain working relationships with relevant governmental authorities and stakeholders.
  • You will conduct senior review of proposal and project deliverables prior to client release in compliance with the Project and WSP’s Quality Management Systems.
  • You will identify and manage environmental commitments, risks, and compliance related deliverables through Bid Period, Planning & Design, Construction, and Operations & Maintenance phases of projects.
  • You will mentor junior and intermediate staff, identifying career goals and development opportunities for them, and for yourself.
  • You will ensure health and safety policies are followed and be a role model for WSP's Life Saving and corporate values.
  • You will primarily be home/office-based but may need to travel for short-duration trips and events.

What you'll bring to WSP:

  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in environmental studies, environmental science, environmental engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in construction phase environmental management on transportation-related projects.
  • Experience with the acquisition of environmental permits and approvals, including preparation of applications.
  • Ability to direct and coordinate the efforts of a multi-disciplinary environmental team (internal staff, external consultants) to achieve the Client's objectives consistent with the scope of services to be provided.
  • Experience working with consultants and contractors during construction phase works to deliver projects in compliance with environmental commitments and permit / approval conditions.
  • Understanding of multiple environmental disciplines and their application to infrastructure projects including any, or all, of the following: air quality, contaminated soil and remediation, natural heritage and Species at Risk, cultural heritage, archaeology, noise/vibration, hydrogeology.
  • Existing relationships with municipal and provincial regulatory agencies.
  • Experience working on complex projects and working with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Experience with building client relationships.
