Job Description

The Engineering Team are looking to fill the role of Team Leader in their Wolverhampton facility. The job holder is responsible for the management of the maintenance team to ensure self-sufficiency of that team. They will assist the Engineering and Facilities Manager in the management of their team including control, planning, organising and motivating. They will ensure that all tasks are carried out safely and effectively meeting all procedural requirements. The job holder is expected to be a role model at all times. The normal working hours are Monday to Friday, 06:30am - 15:30pm. The Team Leader must be flexible to adapt their working times dependent on business demands.

IPL Wolverhampton formerly known as Plastic Bottle Supplies, is an industry manufacturing specialist of HDPE Plastic Bottles with a 20 plus year history of servicing many successful businesses within the UK. IPL Wolverhampton manufactures fully recyclable products with post-consumer recycled options available.

Position Title: Engineering Team Leader

What you will bring to the role:

The successful candidate will:

  • Ensuring compliance with Health and Safety operating procedures and ensuring company and customer technical standards are maintained.
  • Manage HSE issues for the plant ensuring a zero Accident mentality is maintained.
  • Responsible for ordering spare parts and ancillaries and other associated costs for the Engineering department.
  • Ensuring stock levels are maintained as per agreement with the Financial Controller and Engineering and Facilities Manager.
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of engineering projects to ensure they are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
  • Mentor and support the professional development of team members, including conducting performance reviews, identifying training needs, and facilitating career growth opportunities.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment, encouraging open communication, teamwork, and a positive work culture.
  • Allocate resources effectively, including assigning team members to projects based on their skills, experience, and career aspirations.
  • Maintaining the Maintenance Ticket System within IFS and keeping accurate maintenance records.
  • To be hands-on in Engineering maintenance as and when required in order to fulfil business requirements.
  • Co-ordination of service and planned maintenance of all machinery on site to ensure the safe working and maximising efficiencies.
  • Interface with other departments to gather requirements, provide project updates, and ensure alignment with business objectives.
  • Implement and maintain engineering best practices, processes, and tools to improve efficiency, quality, and scalability of equipment development.
  • Investigate and adopt new technologies and methodologies that can improve team performance and product quality.
  • Define, implement, measure, track KPIs to enable improvements within and across disciplines.
  • Develop good communication, team spirit and commitment within the team.
  • Drive business improvement development within the team to ensure effective problem-solving tools are utilised.
  • Use Pareto analysis to regularly identify the top 3 areas for improvement and drive to close out.
  • Achieve business and departmental objectives by best use of resources hour by hour.
  • Identification of all forms of waste reduction.
  • Communicating with the teams by utilising the visual management, delivery shift briefs with focus on quality, cost and delivery and gathering ideas for improvement.
  • Undertaking performance management and taking responsibility for team members, conducting appraisals, and giving direction to aid good people performance.
  • Working closely with the Production/Technical and Engineering Manager to escalate production issues, machine breakdown or general production concerns.
  • Responsible for accurately completing all compliance paperwork, daily shift reports, HR attendance reports or any other documentation or reporting as and when required by the business.
  • Maintaining a consistent production flow ensuring employees are full trained and working efficiently.
  • Authority and responsibility to ensure the shifts are fully staffed, ensuring absences are backfilled by IPL or agency staff.
  • Reporting and managing employee welfare and accidents whilst on shift.

People Management

  • Managing manpower resource effectively to support the delivery of production whilst maintaining manufacturing principles.
  • Drive company absence and sickness procedure to ensure maximum attendance levels.
  • Deal with all personnel issues on shift including interaction with HR and Senior Management.
  • Responsible for all training required including the delivery of all company policies and procedures within your team.
  • Managing time and attendance within company procedures.
  • Carrying out incident, accident and non-conformity investigations and associated reporting and action closure.
  • Motivating and coaching the team to operational success.
  • Monitoring the completion of tasks and ensuring good performance and record on appropriate systems.
  • Consistently promoting high standard through personal example and ensure this practise is rolled out throughout the team so that each member of team understand the standards and behaviours expected of them.
  • Communicating KPIs from the strategic annual plan so that each employee is aware.
  • Ensuring KPIs are met by working to the overall plan, including management of and reporting.
  • Providing product expertise within the team, and respond to production queries.
  • Working positively with support functions to fully define the processes, procedures and controls relevant to team activities, whilst providing support and input to continuous improvement actives within the team.
  • Responsible for carrying out employee appraisals, probations reviews, performance reviews, one to one meetings, absence and attendance reviews, investigation meetings with the guidance and perhaps support of Human Resources or Senior Management.
  • You will be responsible for ensuring all return to work interviews and paperwork are completed for any absences within your team.
  • The authority to ensure the shift is fully staffed to achieve targets and bottles produced, this will include monitoring employee holidays, shift swaps, day to day changes to the staffing rota, managing and controlling agency usage.
  • Ensuring all employees comply with Health and Safety policies and procedures whilst ensuring the company handbook and employment contracts abided to.
  • Sole autonomy to action and procedure with disciplinary and capability procedures and grievance procedures with the guidance and support of Human Resources and Senior Management.

Relationship Management

  • Work positively with support functions to fully define the processes, procedures and controls relevant to team activities.
  • Providing support and input to continuous improvement activities within the team.
  • Interface with Production Scheduling to determine schedules for shift production, work closely with Production Manager and HR to ensure the shift is fully staffed.
  • Liaising and communicating with other departments and ensuring an effective interface with is maintained.
  • Providing feedback to the Management team whilst sharing ideas and improve production, recommending, supporting and implementing continuous improvement activities and process and procedure improvements to optimise results and improve quality of delivery, in line with quality standards requirements delivery in line with Company and Customer requirements.

We expect the desired applicant:

  • Experience with blow moulding, injection moulding or manufacturing plastic products.
  • FLT License.
  • Lean manufacturing.
  • BTEC Qualification of equivalent to Level 3 in Engineering discipline.
  • Six Sigma Training or knowledge of.
  • First Aid Training, First Aid, HACCP Training, BRC Training and HACCP Training – Desirable to have prior to employment, you will be required to undertake all of this training during employment.
  • Managing People – IPL Training will be provided.
