Job Description

Main Responsibilities

Laboratory management - research projects

  • Manages, in collaboration with the faculty, research specialists, the person coordinating technical resources, and the GRS technical team attached to the structures laboratory, research and health and safety activities for the work taking place in the laboratory. Provides supervision and assigns tasks to technical staff and manages material resources for carrying out research experiments, ensuring compliance with the schedule of priorities established by the committee of structural professors;
  • Plans, directs and supervises research activities including the development of work procedures, installation and modification operations of various elements related to research work carried out in the laboratory or in the field. Develops and designs assemblies of various structures, collaborates and participates in the various manufacturing and specimen preparation activities and supervises tests on structural elements;
  • Informs stakeholders of the progress of the work;

Services to industry

  • Manages, alone or in collaboration with GRS professors, the professional activities required for the completion of industrial contracts. In particular, determines the activities to be carried out, drafts service offers, manages contracts with partners, negotiates agreements and administers them, meets with customers, writes work procedures, ensures the completion and smooth running of contracts and writes reports;

Teaching activities

  • Provides scientific and technical assistance and advice to the student community in the development and implementation of their research projects and supports the work of the faculty in the laboratory;

Financial management

  • Manages laboratory operations in compliance with budgetary allocations and execution schedules established within the rules and procedures in force at Polytechnique Montréal;

Advisory role

  • Carries out preliminary studies and analyses, advises various clienteles regarding the selection of materials, products, and the application of standards and codes applicable to projects;
  • Analyzes the test results obtained, presents observations and recommendations to faculty or external clients, writes reports, etc.;
  • Exercises technological monitoring in his area of expertise;

Health and safety

  • Ensures, in collaboration with the person coordinating technical resources in the CGM department, that the equipment and its use meet applicable safety standards. Performs safety analyzes of tasks, writes work procedures, ensures that people using equipment or working in the laboratory have received the necessary training to ensure their safety, that of other people as well as the integrity of the equipment. Checks that information and indications on security measures are present and visible;
  • Sees to the application of the rules established in terms of health and safety at work;

Related activities

  • Performs other tasks, projects or mandates entrusted to him by his immediate superior.

Requirements

Schooling

  • Master’s degree in structural engineering.

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience in structural engineering.
  • Good experience in developing business relationships with companies.
  • Good knowledge and experience of industrial and business environments.
  • Experience in test bench design, use of control systems, experimental measurement, material quality control and concrete technology (asset).

Skills and qualities sought

  • Member in good standing of the Order of Engineers of Quebec (OIQ).
  • Ability to develop and conduct laboratory and in situ tests and research projects and to prepare and submit reports on these tests and projects.
  • Ability to coordinate the work of research and technical staff, as well as the material and financial resources associated with laboratory activities.
  • Ability to interact with a multidisciplinary environment, team mobilization skills.
  • Knowledge of institutional, governmental and industrial rules and standards related to health and safety in the workplace.
  • Good practical knowledge of intellectual property management and technology transfer.
  • Excellent command of the French language (spoken and written) and the English language (asset).

Remuneration

Class 7 (from $69,223 to $117,204).
