Position Summary:

Assess the safety & compliance of ED/AD installations via the review of submissions from the clients for the registration or variance to the design of elevating and amusement devices in accordance with the provincial act, regulations, adopted codes and standards.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate design submissions in relation to the applicable Ontario Regulations and adopted codes and standards (e.g., CSA, ASME, ANSI & ASTM F24) standards including:
    • Review applications, submission details and confirm equipment/installation details for safety & regulatory compliance
    • Analyze the submission document components, such as technical drawings, calculations, schematics, procedural manuals, testing procedures, and perform validation checks or calculations where appropriate
    • Advise client of submission deficiencies, follow up to address outstanding information requirements or technical issues
    • Present and review submission anomalies with internal committees where necessary (e.g., variances)
  • Respond to client requests for consultation regarding the regulations, codes and standards.
  • Collaborate with TSSA Inspectors and/or Investigators in safety incident investigations to determine compliance levels and conduct root cause analysis
  • Research changes to codes and standards, share with TSSA colleagues such as other Engineers, Inspectors and Investigators
  • Contribute to the creation and maintenance of internal processes and documentation such as SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedures), guidelines, checklists or forms and other external documents for clients such as engineering consultants, building owners, managers and architects
  • Actively participate in promoting public safety as a member of external committees such as ASME code committees or events such as industry town halls
  • Continuously develop knowledge of device design, equipment installations, as well as applicable regulatory documentation
  • Participates as a subject matter expert on projects and initiatives
  • Work closely with colleagues to enhance team performance and identify customer service delivery improvements
  • Provide technical support (assisting/helping) inspectors when requested
  • Respond to inquiries from the general public

Job Qualifications:

  • Engineering experience in the elevating and/or amusement device industry or similar control systems
  • Experience in a regulatory environment
  • Electrical Engineering or similar degree is required or other academic program recognized by Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO)
  • P.Eng. license or EIT is an asset
  • Eager to learn and adapt, share knowledge with others
  • Sound knowledge of elevating and amusement device design requirements from a mechanical and/or an electrical perspective
  • Skills in analyzing mechanical and/or electrical prints and/or schematics
  • Sound knowledge of elevating and amusement device or similar control systems design requirements from an Electrical/Electronic/Programmable Electronic System perspective
  • Knowledge of the pertinent acts, regulations, safety codes and standards
  • Expertise in understanding control systems, electrical/pneumatic/hydraulic schematics, failure mode analysis, hazard and risk assessments
  • Software application proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience with performing and/or reviewing risk assessments
