Job Description

Salary Range: $111,641.00 To 134,656.00 Annually

Job Purpose

The Director: Strategic Initiatives is responsible for the implementation of growth initiatives in alignment with the Ottawa Humane Society’s (OHS) strategic plan, and for supporting innovation, impact and effectiveness in the development of OHS services 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the CEO in developing and executing major strategic initiatives, including expansion of services and creation of new ones
  • Track, measure and report on the execution and results of new strategic initiatives
  • Evaluate challenges in existing programs and services and champion enhancements in collaboration with program leads
  • Work closely with all departments, ensuring alignment and effective communication across initiatives
  • Assist and collaborate closely other directors in achieving their operational goals, creating a holistic view of all departments and programs, integrating findings, identifying opportunities and ensuring cohesive strategy execution
  • Lead the research and formulation of business cases for new strategies related to the OHS’s goals
  • Research and oversee the implementation of technical solutions that result in effective, efficient and excellent service delivery
  • Engage proactively with internal and external stakeholders to gather input, facilitate buy-in and achieve alignment on key strategic directions
  • Collaborate broadly across the animal welfare field and relevant industries in the formulation of businesses cases and program development, to achieve maximum effectiveness
  • Oversee and champion the implementation of pilot programs, taking charge of measurement, investment planning and post-execution evaluation
  • Develop and maintain excellent community partnerships 
  • Prepare and deliver written and verbal presentations 
  • Develop, implement, evaluate and ensure adherence to standard operating procedures within assigned functional areas
  • Manage and coordinate department resources 
  • Develop, manage, and ensure adherence to department program budgets 
  • Provide advice and assistance to other managers, directors, CEO, and OHS Board and committees as required
  • Be thoroughly familiar with and ensure adherence to pertinent legislation, regulations, contracts, guidelines, OHS mission, policies, procedures, plans and collective agreement
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of best practices and trends in social, environmental and cultural issues relating to animal care and welfare and shelter best practices
  • Produce and maintain accurate reports, records, and files
  • Manage department administrative files and human resources documents and files
  • Participate in supervision, evaluation, training, and other meetings as required
  • Provide training, orientation and supervision for student, volunteer, and work placements as required
  • Lead and manage department staff including orientation, training, performance management, coaching and daily supervision 
  • Hire, fire and discipline staff in consultation with the CEO and Director: People & Culture 
  • Be familiar with and ensure compliance with all health and safety policies and procedures 
  • Participate in the identification and evaluation of OHS program goals and objectives
  • Participate in professional development opportunities 
  • May be require to assume some responsibilities of President & CEO

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary school degree or diploma in a related field – business degree preferred
  • Significant demonstrated experience with the implementation of technology solutions
  • A minimum of 8 years’ relevant progressive experience in strategy consulting
  • A minimum of 4 years’ leadership experience
  • Demonstrated excellent strategic and critical thinking skills and business acumen
  • Proven ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and significant experience with databases and technology applications
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is required

  Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

  • Employee may be required to work occasional evening, holiday and weekend shifts
  • Employee is required to be available to respond to after-hours emergencies
  • Employment is conditional upon having and maintaining a valid driver’s license
  • Employment is conditional upon maintaining confidentiality of OHS information
  • Employment is conditional upon the ability to work around all species of animals safely

Schedule 

75 hours bi-weekly.
