We are looking for a Director with demonstrated experience to join the operations team in our Aluminum product group in Kitimat, Canada, where they will lead the Carbon Operations Department. The Carbon department is responsible for the preparation and manufacturing of carbon anodes, which are essential components in the electrolytic process of producing aluminum. The carbon anodes serve as conductors of electricity and play a crucial role in the reduction of alumina to aluminum metal.

Reporting to the General Manager and working a Monday to Friday schedule, you will be:
  • Adhering to Rio Tinto's Health, Safety, and Environmental standards while actively engaging in our culture of care, courage, and curiosity.
  • Leading and overseeing all operational activities within the carbon department to ensure efficient and safe production processes.
  • Developing and implementing strategic plans to optimize carbon production, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and industry best practices.
  • Driving a culture of continuous improvement, through implementation of Lean production methodology, fostering innovation and efficiency.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to optimize production schedules and ensure timely delivery of anodes.
  • Implementing and monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) to track and improve safety, process performance and quality.
  • Providing leadership, guidance, development to a team of Superintendents, Supervisors, and Operators, fostering a culture of accountability, excellence, and engagement within your team.
  • Developing and managing departmental budgets
  • Supporting critical breakdowns, incidents, or leadership in the field, outside of your standard schedule as required.
What you'll bring
  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.
  • Advanced skills in leadership, influence, and negotiation.
  • Possession of a Bachelor of Engineering degree in a relevant field, such as Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, or Metallurgical
  • At least 20 years of relevant experience
  • Able to influence strategic direction, translating it into practical and innovative solutions, and delivering improved productivity.
  • Exceptional engagement, communication, and coaching skills, ensuring seamless collaboration across diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Detailed understanding of the aluminum smelting process.
  • A continuous improvement mindset and experience developing and delivering on business improvement objectives.
  • Advanced analytical skills, including but not limited to financial analysis.
  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal.

The base salary range for this role is $162,560 - $243,840 CAD in addition to allowances, bonus, equity, health or retirement benefits, and any other discretionary benefits offered at Rio Tinto. Our base salary ranges are based on role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by the skills, experience, and impact you bring to the role.
