Job Description

Overall Purpose:

Power To Be is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing access to nature for individuals facing cognitive, physical, financial, and social barriers. We empower the exploration of boundless capabilities through our nature-based programs. In 2022, we established our custom-designed, lakefront facility, embodying our core values of inclusion, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. We are in search of a candidate who is enthusiastic about a part-time, fixed-term role from August 2024 to December 2025. The Director of Finance should be sociable, possess strong communication skills, and have a passion for their profession. Reporting to the Co-CEOs, the Director of Finance will oversee the accounting operations of the organization. Responsibilities include generating periodic financial reports, upholding the accounting records system, and implementing a comprehensive set of controls and budgets to minimize risk, improve the accuracy of the organization's financial results, and ensure compliance with Canadian Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations.

SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Finance

  • Overall financial management including approval and development of, monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements
  • Responsible for finance and accounting, including reviewing A/R, A/P, GL transactions, payroll, and ensuring quality control over financial transactions and ensuring financial reporting is maintained
  • Monitor and forecast cash flows
  • Prepare and publish timely monthly financial statements, working closely with Co-CEOs to communicate financial metrics and understand operational variances
  • Responsible for the creation of quarterly reports for the Board of Directors and the Audit and Finance Committee
  • Lead and facilitate quarterly and annual close process and the annual financial audit
  • Implement complex transactions in consultation with the Co-CEOs
  • Develop, document, and audit business processes and financial controls policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
  • Manage and comply with government/regulatory reporting requirements and filings
  • Work closely with the Leadership Team and their staff to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures and explore how the finance function can best support their departments
  • Coordinate budgeting and re-forecasting process with the Leadership Team in collaboration with the Co-CEOs
  • In collaboration with the Head of Grants & Impact responsible for grant compliance
  • Provide strategic financial advice and guidance to the Co-CEOs
  • Adhere to and mentor others to adhere to the Income Tax Act, CRA guidelines, Canadian accounting standards for Not for Profit organizations

Management and Leadership

  • Recruit, supervise, develop, train, and support finance staff and volunteers in alignment with organizational values and policies, the BC Employment Standards Act and other related policies or procedures
  • Oversee scheduling for relevant employees and volunteers
  • Promote a positive and co-operative work environment aligned with the Power To Be values of respect, integrity and innovation
  • Provide feedback regularly and constructively to hold team members accountable to our vision, team culture and individual responsibilities
  • Set relevant quarterly and annual team benchmarks with regular follow up
  • Create a sense of confidence and trust so that change is regarded as a contribution to social impact; implement ideas and approaches that are likely to add value
  • Serve as a role model in making necessary decisions that are consistent with legislation, organizational objectives, precedent and established policies and procedures
  • Integrate risk management into organizational planning
  • See collaboration and diversity as opportunities
  • Assist the Co-CEOs as an active member of the Leadership Team and ensure all staff members are aware of their roles and expectations during major business disruptions and/or events
  • Be a support to co-workers, volunteers and stakeholders; assist co-workers with their responsibilities in their absence as required
  • Participate and/or chair meetings as required
  • Contribute to the development, monitoring and achievement of the annual plans and associated goals in support of the strategic plan and vision of Power To Be
  • Act as a resource to the Board of Directors or related committees as directed
  • Support the development of facility and/or operational policies and procedures; participate in or lead the annual review of incidents and related policies
  • Provide leadership on all related policy, procedures, goals, industry standards and legislation
  • Adhere to Participant Protection Policy and be a champion for this effort

Operations

  • Adhere to the annual operating budget, capital budget and financial controls
  • Responsible for leading the strategic development of annual operating and capital budgets
  • Provide timely assistance and leadership in administrative functions such as documentation, progress reports, external and internal communications, receipt management and tracking
  • Review quarterly individual and departmental work plans with the Co-CEOs set work, vacation, training and professional development schedules to ensure adequate coverage
  • Integrate the use of technology as core practice to ensure the effective deployment of Power To Be assets and work flow with specific consideration for privacy standards
  • Act in accordance with brand standards, the donor recognition policy and related standards
  • Actively cultivate a positive reputation for Power To Be by acting in accordance with organizational values when communicating
  • Support community and fundraising events as directed
  • Participate in a Power To Be program once per quarter

Perform other related duties, as required.

  •  Strategic thinker, with the ability to be creative and to think outside the box

Requirements:

  • As per the Ministry of Justice requirements for organizations that work with vulnerable populations, a Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Criminal Record Review Act Check (CRRA) will be required
  • CPA designation (minimum 2 years post designation or equivalent experience)
  • 2+ years management experience at a supervisory level with budget and staff oversight
  • Experience with cloud-based bookkeeping/accounting software like Xero
  • Proof of full vaccination against Covid-19 required.

Assets:

  • Experience with Salesforce and/or Xero
  • Experience within a non-profit organizations and Canadian Accounting Standards for Not for Profit Organizations
  • Demonstrated leadership background, with the ability to communicate financial information and to influence positive change
  • Experience with Financial Statement Audit
  • Success seeing beyond the numbers, identifying trends and new possibilities.

Terms of Employment

Location: Prospect Lake (Hybrid)

Position: Director of Finance

Reports to: Co-CEO’s

Hours: 24 hours per week

Term: August 2024 – December 2025

Compensation: $60-65,000
