What is the Opportunity?

The Designer, Marketing Communications is responsible for visually communicating all aspects and initiatives of The Royal Conservatory. They collaborate closely with divisions across The Conservatory, as well as external suppliers, to lead the design, development, and implementation of a vast array of print and digital creative.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

As their work is highly visible to Royal Conservatory staff and the general public, the Designer, Marketing Communications’ responsibility is to promote the brand in the very best way possible. Their work is reviewed by all divisions and levels of The Royal Conservatory (e.g., Vice Presidents, Development Officers, Managers, and the President) through both formal presentations and email communications. Reviews are followed by requests for changes or final approvals. Once approved, it is the Designer’s responsibility to prepare projects for production/implementation.

The breakdown of the Designer’s responsibilities is as follows:

  • Design, develop, and deliver a wide range of print and digital creative
    • Capital campaign and donor-related materials
    • Government reports and proposals
    • Fundraising materials and special event collateral
    • Advertisements and promotional materials
    • Direct mail
    • Sales collateral
    • Product packaging
    • Printed and digital signage
    • Illustrations, photo-editing
    • PowerPoint presentations, internal reports and materials for board meetings
    • Academic and corporate stationery design
    • Digital creative, including requirements for email, web banners, social media content
  • Project management duties, such as developing comprehensive work-back schedules, managing approval processes, working with external suppliers to ensure that all projects stay firmly on track and are delivered on time, ensuring all projects are of outstanding quality, and are appropriately branded according to our Style Guide.
  • Other marketing and communications projects and responsibilities as assigned.
  • The Designer consults the Director, Digital Marketing and Creative Services on issues that require their input and guidance to resolve. Examples include requests that deviate from the style guide, conflicting priorities, unexpected demands requiring outsourcing approval, or other issues that may necessitate the need to make decisions with unplanned or revised budgetary implications, etc.
Job Requirements

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor of Design degree (BDes) or equivalent, with a specialization in Graphic Design.
  • 4-6 years of design experience, with additional experience in a project management capacity.
  • Exceptional creativity and innovation, excellent theoretical and practical knowledge of design and typographic principles.
  • Excellent IT and studio software skills, especially with design and photo-editing software.
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills.
  • Experience with Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Quark Express.
  • Highly collaborative and able to thrive in fast-paced environment.
  • A solid understanding of The Royal Conservatory’s mission as well as each of its business units, target audiences, and key messages relevant to each project.
  • Strong accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
  • An understanding of the latest design trends.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines.

Salary Range

$60,000 - $65,000 per annum.

Additional Information

  • Required to work flexible hours at times, including some evening and weekend work.
