The Role – Data Analyst

CanREA collects and analyses technical and market data to keep our members up to date on Canada’s fleet of wind energy, solar energy, and energy storage infrastructure throughout the year. This is to provide data to interested parties, to keep our members up to date on new project developments, existing capacities, and market statistics, and to signal the state of the industry as the definitive voice of the sector – in particular year-over-year growth in pursuit of net-zero goals. CanREA’s data mission is to harness the power of data and information to advance the interests of the wind, solar, and energy storage industries.

To build this capability, CanREA intends to hire a

Data Analyst on a 3-year term contract.

This role will report to CanREA’s Director - Operations Programs, and will be responsible for crafting data methodology, designing and building the database infrastructure, creating an automated data input process, and providing industry reports and analysis. The Data Analyst will build databases that will collect and analyse renewable energy data and relevant standards and regulations within the Canadian markets.

This role requires a self-motivated, independent worker with strong attention to detail, and exceptional organizational skills. They must have the skill to develop and work on databases, and the ability to produce logical data summaries and reports outlining the current state of the industry through key metrics.

Primary Responsibilities

The main objective of the role is to elevate the quality and capacity of CanREA’s various databases, including, but not limited to: Optimize CanREA’s database for wind, solar and energy storage projects whether in operation, under development or decommissioned. This includes supporting data such as ownership of asset, O&M contracts, job multipliers, general industry data and other economic impact data. Support the development and publication of an annual data report and mid-year updates in support of the Communications and Business Development Teams. Support CanREA’s Policy Team by providing summaries and analysis of fleet data, codes & standards, relevant research findings, collaborations and integrations with regional and international partner datasets as requested.

Secondary Responsibilities

The secondary objective is to provide a research function to expand renewable-energy expertise through in-depth knowledge of Canada’s renewable energy and energy storage fleet by keeping the databases up to date and maintaining accurate data to be able to produce various standard and customized reports including but not limited to: Provincial summaries of installed capacities. Forecasted installed capacity based on proposed project data. Aggregate, regional, behind the meter (ex roof-top solar) generation and storage capacities. Market shares of manufacturers, developers, owners, operators, and service providers. Response to specific questions from CanREA’s policy team regarding installed and near-term capacity additions. Qualifications Completion of undergraduate level studies in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM). High level of proficiency and skill with MS Excel, creating complex cell formulas, and spreadsheet/workbook functions. Advanced knowledge of spreadsheet formulas, macros, and pivot tables. Knowledge and/or experience with database architecture, construction, and software such as Microsoft Access. Excellent data analysis capabilities including identification and troubleshooting of errors, ability to identify patterns and anomalies in large data sets, attention to detail and precision. Good MS Office Suite formatting skills for creating standardized data report forms. Experience in research using the internet, referencing sources, and distilling large amounts of information into concise summaries. Exhibit an inclusive and respectful attitude towards others. Excellent writing and communications skills. Ability to work from home (internet connection, quiet space, etc.) as CanREA is a remote-only working environment.

Assets Renewable energy knowledge or work experience. Knowledge of construction, installation, and operational permitting and approval processes, standards, and regulations in the various Canadian jurisdictions. Coursework on electrical energy concepts such as alternating current, direct current, energy storage mediums, etc. Ability to apply simple statistical analysis methods such calculating standard deviations, establish confidence levels, and correlation coefficients. Data analytics such as statistics and advanced mathematics. Working knowledge of French.
