Job Description

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s used nuclear fuel inside a deep geological repository, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.

Founded in 2002, the NWMO has been guided for 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Holders that are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. Canada’s plan will only proceed in an area with informed and willing hosts, where the municipality, First Nation and Métis communities, and others in the area are working together to implement it. The NWMO plans to select a site in 2024, and two areas remain in our site selection process: the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation-Ignace area in northwestern Ontario and the Saugeen Ojibway Nation-South Bruce area in southern Ontario.

Corporate Communications Coordination Associate

(Employment Status: Fulltime)

Position Location: Toronto Head Office – 22 St. Clair Avenue East

Job Summary:

Reporting to the – Manager, Corporate Communications, the Corporate Communications Coordination Associate will be responsible for the coordination and administering the tactical implementation of communications plans and campaigns. This includes developing a variety of communications materials (e.g. web copy, news releases, backgrounders, stakeholder emails, contributed pieces, mail drops, flyers, advertising materials etc.) and ushering them through appropriate approval processes before releasing them to the public and key stakeholders. The position also is responsible for measuring the success of various content strategies and adapting to insights from analysis. This role involves juggling multiple projects at one time and ensuring communications products are developed to quality standards and on schedule.

  • Contribute to the development, implementation, management and evolution of NWMO communications content, plans and overall department strategies.
  • Provide operational support on the execution of a variety of communications strategies, campaigns and tactical plans.
  • Coordinate communication materials from content development (writing, editing proofreading, approval, translation) to design, production, printing, distribution, mailing and placement. Ensure all materials:
  • Are consistent with and help achieve NWMO communications strategies;
  • Meet NWMO visual identity requirements;
  • Communicate consistent key messages;
  • Are appropriately adapted to multiple platforms where required;
  • Incorporate current communications best practice;
  • Are appropriate given specialized needs of each target audience
  • Proceed through appropriate approval processes before being released.
  • Examples of materials include: newsletters, backgrounders, brochures, reports, web copy, social media content, video scripts, exhibits, flyers and advertisements.
  • Plan, research and collaborate with subject matter experts and members of the communications team to produce written, video, graphic and other content for use in a range of platforms. Ensure content is adapted appropriately for maximum effectiveness in each platform.
  • Create and support editorial plans and content development for a range of communication channels, (e.g. social media, paid advertising, media, e-mail etc.).
  • Manage a range of internal and external resources to ensure each project is produced on time, on budget, and in accordance with NWMO brand standards and communication strategies. Ensure resources are scheduled to avoid bottlenecks, delays or unnecessary costs. These resources typically could include graphic designers, photographers, translators, exhibit developers and printers.
  • Set up and track communications projects, campaigns and strategies in Wrike (the team’s project management tool) and co-ordinate with team members and others in the organization to ensure projects are completed on time and in line with timelines set in strategies and plans.
  • Use consistent proactive and reactive messages to effectively tell the NWMO story across all digital platforms, and align and integrate appropriately with offline messages.
  • Ensure corporate communication standards and policies, including visual identity, are applied consistently.
  • Regularly use analytics to measure impact, capture insights and produce reports and recommendations for continuous development and improvement.
  • From time to time, represent the NWMO in engagement activities. This may involve representing the NWMO at public engagement events such as open houses, tours, or trade conferences and handling questions from the public.
  • Keep up with trends in communications and nuclear industry and develop strategies and tactics to appropriately adapt our activities to drive progress toward the NWMO’s goals.
  • Assist with operational tasks as required, e.g. Updating budget documents, accruals, procurement plans, monthly/weekly status reports etc.)
  • Assist in identifying opportunities to streamline and improve processes, provide input for automating processes, and actively implement changes as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience; however, those with lesser experience should not hesitate to apply.

  • 4 years of University education in public relations, journalism or communications, or equivalent
  • Over 2 years and up to and including 4 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
  • Requires experience in corporate communications to contribute to, support, and execute communications strategies and plans. Including Experience required include planning, content development
  • Requires experience across channels, print, digital, mail and email blasts etc..
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, writing, and editing content for a variety of communications media.
  • Requires experience withanalytics from various channels and reporting
  • Requires excellent oral and written communications.
  • Requires excellent organizational, planning and presentation skills and the ability to work with internal staff.
  • Requires strong customer service orientation to the work.
  • Requires proficiency in standard word processing, presentation and desktop publishing applications.
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada and must be able to meet security clearance requirements.

The following skills and experience are considered assets:

  • Proficient French language skills (written and oral) an asset.
  • with PR firms and agencies so experience working with external agencies and vendors is beneficial.

NWMO currently operates in a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office (Tuesdays being universal) and 2 days working from home.
