The PositionThe successful candidate will be a highly organized individual who is self-motivated. The specialist is responsible for assisting in identifying gaps, developing processes, and implementing changes to food products in manufacturing. The specialist will join the Operations team, which strives to optimize Giraffe’s manufacturing practices and deliver a consistent, safe, and delicious product. This role will require the individual to execute many high value and time sensitive projects simultaneously with a cross functional team including R&D, Sales, Operations, Regulatory, and Purchasing. The Specialist will work report to the Continuous Improvement and EHS Manager.Key AccountabilitiesContinuous ImprovementContinuous Improvement, Sustainability & Optimization ProjectsManage workflow and introduce new processes for Discontinuation TaskforceAssist in process improvement regarding change control, identification of gaps and roll out of solution.Identifying opportunities for process improvement, waste removal, and cost reductionPlanning, facilitating, and executing continuous improvement events using Lean Six Sigma tools.Clearly defining program objectives and scope.Evaluating and prioritizing potential improvements based on gains and required effort.Report on efficacy of processes in place, identify areas for improvement, and implement changes.Identify and project manage discontinuation initiatives for ingredients, formulas, packaging formats, and labels.Troubleshoot manufacturing issues and make solution recommendations. Oversee aspects of first production and relevant set up paperwork.Maintain regular communication with relevant internal and external parties.Manage projects from concept to full roll out.Minimize foreseeable circumstances leading to project delay.Perform any other duties assigned by their supervisor(s) and as official back up where required to other functions.Environmental Health and SafetyDevelop, coordinate the implementation occupational health and safety program designed to prevent injury, occupational illness, damage to property, and new ideas to drive world class safety.Generate and carry-out risk assessments.Coordinate and conduct safety training to all employees.Ensure compliance with OHSA of Ontario.Assist and support environmental health and safety projects.Prepare reports or review findings from accident investigations, facilities inspections, or environmental testing.Collaborate with facility management to implement control and remedial measures for hazardous and potentially hazardous conditions or equipment.Ensure health and safety communication boards are up to date, schedule Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings and inspections, follow-up on JHSC items and prepare/follow-up on actions.Coordinate file drills for Giraffe Foods locations and emergency evacuation procedures.Identify and implement recommendations for the continuous improvement of the safety culture.Other duties as assigned.Required Skills & QualificationsPassion for Continuous Improvement Ability to lead and drive implementation and improvement of key Continuous Improvement and EHS projects.Ability to communicate with all levels within the organization.Strong work habits focusing on safety, quality, and productivity.University or College Degree in, Food Science (preferred), Science, Engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with proven efficiency to handle multiple projects at one time.Have a high level of integrity and work ethics; able to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively.Ability to work under tight time constraints and adapt to change.Ability to work within a team environment.High proficiency with Microsoft OfficeAn understanding of corporate and industry practices (CFIA and FDA), processes, standards and their impact on project activities is an asset.ESHA Genesis and Microsoft Project is an asset.Hard Skills:Continuous Improvement5SSMEDLean ManufacturingKaizenLean Six SigmaRoot Cause AnalysisValue Stream Mappingknowledge of and ability to interpret and apply the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) and Regulations.Experience with Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems is an asset.Proficiency in commonly used and specialized softwareStrong working knowledge of Microsoft Suite, including advanced skills with Excel.Demonstrated ability to work in high paced and changing environments.
