Job Description

Reporting to the General Manager, the incumbent is accountable for the profitability of their designated business unit. The incumbent is responsible for oversight of managing projects, processes, customer relationships, and a team of employees within the division. As part of the senior leadership team for the Construction Division, the incumbent will participate in the management team meetings and work together to set strategic objectives for the group.

Location: Ottawa, ON

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ongoing professional development of the project managers and the team – one on ones, project assistance/input etc.
  • Provide oversight and be accountable for the project deliverables; initiate project reviews and ensure risk are continuously assessed and mitigated
  • Reviews tenders including strategies for winning, identifying key risks, opportunities, key suppliers and subcontractors/partners and provide a challenge function on the costs (sanity check), review mark-up
  • Collaborates regularly with other managers to monitor workload, transfer information, and advance corporate priorities
  • Forecasting tenders, specifically for complicated and integrated jobs, to facilitate the technical knowledge for creating a bid team
  • Review contractual documents to ensure risk mitigation for the overall business unit and that risk is aligned and acceptable with to Tomlinson
  • Managing and developing teams that ensure construction activities are executed in accordance with the designs, budget and schedules
  • Maintain consistent integrated communications with project management and operations.
  • Works with the project team to communicate and understand the progress of the projects (issues, claims etc.)
  • Ensures that the quality of work completed meets the company standards

  • Make salary and bonus recommendations
  • Recommends hires and dismisses all employees within the division
  • Writes and delivers evaluations and development plans to direct reports
  • Defines direct reports performance goals and ensures alignment with overall corporate goals
  • Develops and improves the processes for executing the construction division’s work
  • Establishes the roles and responsibilities for employees
  • Participates in monthly cost review meetings
  • Participate in the decision on what work is necessary to maintain a full schedule
  • Review and approve invoices
  • Review submissions for projects (schedules, traffic control plans etc.) when necessary
  • Works with existing and potential clients to foster partnerships on potential projects
  • Ensure that P-6 schedules are created and updated weekly to provide a macro level work on hand schedule for all field operations
  • Participate in business development activities and client relations

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Standard office conditions
  • Working conditions are normal for a construction industry environment, including weekly job site visits, visiting job site where there may be physical aspects of navigating rough terrain, climbing and use of a ladder
  • Work may require occasional weekend and/or evening work

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor of Engineering, CET, bachelor’s degree in business or equivalent, or equivalent additional experience
  • 15+ years of construction experience
  • Shoring and Piling experience considered an asset
  • 10+ years of experience managing large teams
  • Demonstrated strong written, verbal and presentation communication skills
  • Experience with direct supervision of employees
  • Ability to act as the company spokesperson and delivery of key messaging
  • Experience with development and execution of strategic plans
