Venor is proud to partner with our client, Grieg Seafood, in their search for a Compliance Director.

Grieg Seafood is a global leader in salmon aquaculture. The company operates farms in Norway’s Rogaland and Finnmark regions, as well as British Columbia and Newfoundland in Canada. With headquarters in Bergen, Norway, Grieg Seafood’s dynamic team of over 750 professionals spread across various regions plays a crucial role in the organization’s continued success and growth.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Compliance Director will work independently to support Grieg Seafood’s functions with primary accountability for obtaining and maintaining applicable certifications. The Director will actively contribute to the development and implementation of strategies, policies and standards for assigned projects and participate in technical working groups and activities relating to compliance; they will support the activities of the regulatory and compliance function with primary accountability for overseeing the preparation and management of simple and complex environmental and regulatory submissions. The Director will oversee the development and implementation of strategies for assigned projects and participate in technical working groups and activities relating to compliance. From time to time, they will undertake other responsibilities as directed.

Participation in the development of core values and strategies to ensure that these are broadly adopted is required as is the active utilization of tools developed by Grieg Seafood to foster a high performing team.

Key Responsibilities

Certification and Company Standards Implementation

  • The Director will take the primary role in the development, maintenance and enhancement of company certification standards including but not limited to certifications in Best Aquaculture Practice (BAP) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) throughout the Grieg Seafood’s operations. Additional support may be required to the Grieg Seafood’s contractors or suppliers in pursuit of the company’s certification goals;
  • Assist, where applicable, Grieg contractors or suppliers (e.g. including but not limited to fish processing, feed manufacture, transportation, net manufacturers, contract growers etc.) in the development, maintenance and enhancement of their company’s certification standards;
  • Liaise with customers and the Grieg Seafood’s sales organization Grieg Seafood Sales North America regarding certification status and standards;
  • Coordinate and participate in the internal auditing of Grieg Seafood procedures. Internal auditing is scheduled at least quarterly for all saltwater sites and monthly for freshwater sites but may change based on circumstances;
  • With the support of Grieg staff (Fish Health, Health & Safety, Regulatory & Compliance and Production), enhance and implement internal auditing procedures;
  • Assemble and collate annual corporate data for participation in NL Aquaculture Sustainability Report and GSF (Grieg Seafood) Joint Sustainability Report; and

Production Management:

  • Oversee projects related to the long-term expansion goals of Grieg Seafood NL, including but not limited to post-smolt facilities, processing plants, Bays West and additional sites in Placentia Bay;
  • Communicate operational and regulatory issues or perceived risks to operations to their immediate supervisor and other staff as appropriate, including at least a monthly review and reporting of project activities and progress;
  • Work closely with the other staff in successful implementation and management of the Grieg Seafood’s environmental and regulatory requirements;
  • Interface with internal divisions, regulatory groups and consultants in the preparation, review, compilation, finalization, submission of documents and public notifications in a timely manner;
  • Represent Grieg Seafood at meetings, on committees, external groups including Boards and First Nations key stakeholders’ groups as required;

Talent Management:

  • Ensure adherence to company Human Resources practices and procedures and fostering of positive ongoing relationships with all employees;
  • Ensure that Grieg Seafood’s “ways of working” are modelled and adopted throughout their team; The incumbent will work within Greig Seafood NL’s core values to deliver a positive ‘constructive’ workplace environment; and
  • Responsible for the safety of the team.

Other:

  • Understand and adhere to government regulations, Standard Operating Practices, WorkSafe NL regulations and company biosecurity rules and practices.

The ideal candidate holds a Degree in Aquaculture, Certifications, Regulatory Affairs, Environmental studies or equivalent. They will have a minimum five (5) years’ of supervisory related work experience, preferably in an industrial setting (e.g., mining, forestry, or with fisheries, aquaculture and/or a marine setting or equivalent). Experience with certification submissions including interpreting standards requirements; developing and maintaining certifications application timelines is preferred. A combination of education and experience will be considered.

The incumbent will bring excellent leadership, organizational, interpersonal, time management and problem-solving skills. They possess knowledge and understanding of Provincial and Federal policy, regulations and legislation regarding finfish aquaculture. The successful candidate will have excellent project management skills; advanced computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook); strong verbal and written communication skills; and a valid driver’s license.

The Compliance Director is ideally based in Marystown and works 40 hours on average per week Monday to Friday. However, Grieg Seafood is open to a flexible and/or hybrid work schedule within Newfoundland.
