About this Opportunity
The University of Victoria invites qualified candidates to apply for the role of Community Safety and Training Specialist within the Campus Security Services department. This pivotal position reports directly to the Associate Director of Parking & Commuter Services and is essential for ensuring a safe, secure, and inclusive campus environment. The selected candidate will be responsible for the design, implementation, and administration of comprehensive training programs aimed at enhancing the safety and wellness of students, faculty, and staff. This includes developing and delivering training in First Aid, CPR, and incident management, among others, while maintaining a strong focus on trauma-informed practices. The role also entails managing departmental communications and engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders to foster collaborative relationships. Ideal candidates will have a background in emergency response, security, or a related field, coupled with strong organizational and communication skills, and the ability to handle crisis situations effectively. This opportunity is suited for individuals who are passionate about creating and maintaining a safe learning and working environment, contributing significantly to the university's mission of excellence.
The salary range for this position is:
Recruitment range: $70,137- $77,330 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.
Performance range: starting salary to max of $91,214 is available through annual performance increases.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Associate Director, Parking & Commuter Services, the Community Safety and Training Specialist is responsible for the coordination, implementation, administration, and delivery of training and programs for Campus Security staff and the campus community. Driven by a commitment to campus safety, the Specialist assesses and monitors working environments, emerging trends, public health alerts, and the need for care and/or emotional wellness of the campus community to design these training programs.
This role is also responsible for managing departmental communication including social media, web, and printed materials.
It is of critical importance that the incumbent has awareness of trauma-informed approaches to training and program administration.
Job Requirements
This position requires a combination of study and minimum of 1 year of experience in an area such as emergency response, conflict resolution, security, social work, counselling and/or psychology. Previous experience in coaching, training, and/or teaching are highly valued.
Specific certifications required:

  • First Aid Instructor Certification
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and aptitude to learn new technology platforms/applications for educational purposes.
  • Proficiency with social media platforms and best practices.
  • Skilled in maintaining composure in crisis situations, with the ability to adapt to dynamic work environments and manage multiple tasks independently.
  • Self-awareness in establishing healthy boundaries and stress management.
  • Ability to handle confidential and/or sensitive issues with tact, diplomacy, and compassion.
  • Requirement to obtain and maintain a security officer-level security clearance.

  • Mental health first aid, trauma informed practice, suicide intervention, violence risk assessment, crisis response.
  • Incident management and Intervention model training.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships across campus.
  • Knowledge and awareness of complex issues on campus and emerging trends in higher education, and how those issues may affect campus safety activities and programming.
  • Ability to work with young adult (aged 18-24) and diverse populations individually and in a community/group setting.
