The newly created Saskatchewan Marshals Service (SMS) will provide additional law enforcement presence across Saskatchewan. The SMS will conduct proactive investigations and support the RCMP, First Nations and municipal police services. 

The Opportunity

The SMS is seeking a creative and highly motivated Communications Consultant with experience in communications planning and stakeholder relations. 

Reporting to the Executive Director, Operational Support Services, the successful candidate will: 

  • Collaborate with ministry officials to organize events, promote ministry activities, and tell the SMS story using photography, graphics, and video through various mediums, including social media;
  • Support the ministry's internal communications needs and strategies (SMS communication plan), organizing news conferences and events, and monitoring justice related media stories; 
  • Be responsible for writing, editing and reviewing ministry communications such as speaking notes, briefing notes, key messages and correspondence; 
  • Work with your colleagues in the SMS to coordinate internal and external communications;
  • Provide strategic communications support to other branches and divisions within the SMS; and, 
  • Act as a spokesperson for the SMS on policing issues or events or as required by the Chief or the Chief’s delegate.

The Ideal Candidate

As our successful candidate, you will be well organized with superior judgment and interpersonal skills and demonstrate:

  • An in-depth knowledge of strategic communications, theories, and principles;
  • An in-depth knowledge of journalistic practices and techniques; 
  • The ability to identify key issues, research, analyze and integrate complex and often sensitive information from numerous sources in a timely manner; 
  • The ability to compose a variety of internal and external communications materials, including website and intranet content, speeches, and news releases; 
  • The ability to work as part of a team in order to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment, while working independently and supporting others within the organization; 
  • A desire to strive for service excellence when collaborating with internal and external stakeholders; and 
  • The ability to be innovative and demonstrate initiative when working in a constantly changing environment.

Typically, the knowledge and competencies required for this position would be acquired through the completion of an undergraduate degree in journalism or a related field of study, combined with relevant experience. Working knowledge of best practices in media and communication relations is an asset. 

To be eligible for this opportunity, selected candidates will be required to undergo an enhanced security screening process and obtain and maintain a security clearance as a condition of employment. 

A valid Saskatchewan driver's license is required as occasional travel within the province will be required.
