The Job Profile

Simon & Schuster UK’s, Adult Editorial Fiction team is looking for a commercially savvy, creative and strategic editor to work with the Deputy Publishing Director on the crime and thriller list, which is home to manySunday Timesbestselling and award-winning authors including Chris Carter, Nicci French, Ruth Ware, Jack Jordan, Michael Bennett, Alexandra Benedict, Stuart Neville and Jo Callaghan.

Reporting to the Deputy Publishing Director, Crime and Thriller Fiction, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to build their own list as part of the wider crime and thriller list at Simon & Schuster UK, bringing a wealth of new talent to the wider commercial fiction list.

The Job Role

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding for the genre and connections with authors, agents, communities, journalists and booksellers, and will be able to use those connections to enhance and grow the reputation for S&S UK within this market. They will be passionate readers of the genre, aware of reader demands and able to publish into those trends, with an eye to future trends.

The core responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to; to commission new titles in the crime and thriller genre and manage backlist to ensure that publishing lists meet identified market needs. To provide authors and agents with the highest standard of care. To project manage own titles to critical path and liaise with other departments to ensure smooth and effective publishing process.

The Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have excellent knowledge and understanding of the crime & thriller market within the UK and globally and will have published widely in this area complemented by strong negotiating skills and a commercial and strategic understanding of the market. They will be able to work across all departments internally to ensure buy-in and engagement for the list and will be able to publish within a busy and collegiate team.

The ideal candidate would have experience in editing fiction and managing the publishing process. You should be able to work quickly and decisively, taking decisions and putting them into action. You should be confident in managing your workload and be a proactive self-starter, as well as being able to demonstrate high-level editorial competency.
