Job Description

R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited is currently seeking a Civil Engineering Technologist/Surveyor with a minimum of 2 years of experience surveying to join the Infrastructure Services Group.

Role Specifics

The position will be primarily focused on completing topographic surveys, but will also involve providing assistance to Professional Engineers and other technical staff on a variety of bridge and transportation related projects and working on design tasks using AutoCAD as well as other general office and field assignments.

More specifically, the position will involve carrying out the following tasks:

  • Conducting accurate pre-engineering Topographic, Boundary, Staking, Monitoring, Unit Measure up, Layout, Grades, Building and Bridge Surveys, Drainage Surveys and Construction surveys;
  • Maintain and prepare accurate field notes, records and sketches to describe work performed;
  • Utilized GPS equipment for locating monuments and mapping layout of buildings and other structural features;
  • Complete construction review and inspection;
  • Utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D to design and produce functional, preliminary, and detailed design drawings for a wife variety of road and bridge projects;
  • Production of detailed engineering drawings including plan, profile and section drawings;
  • Proactively advance design techniques and procedures to support designers, project managers and technicians;
  • Prepare cost estimates, quantities and tender packages;
  • Prepare necessary reports including calculations;
  • Assistant Contract Administration staff with preparation of tender documents, site visits, deficiency review and security releases;
  • Responsible for organized note keeping/file management, including submittal of data to required parties; and
  • Other tasks as assigned

Professional Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications

The following qualifications, experience and skills are required:

  • Diploma/certificate in Civil Engineering Technology or related program;
  • Topographical Survey experience using GPS equipment;
  • Work related AutoCAD experience (Civil 3D will be considered an asset);
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks;
  • The ability to thrive under a fast-paced environment;
  • Effective communication skills (written/verbal) with partners and all levels of staff;
  • Proficient in the use of desktop computational tools such as MS Office 365 including Microsoft Project, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Bluebeam and/or Adobe Acrobat;
  • Exceptional commitment to customer service with strong sense of urgency;
  • Strong attention to detail with high ethical standard.

We are considering applications from candidates with the following skills:

  • Can perform RTK surveys using our Trimble Base Station and VRS surveys utilizing the Cannet VRS Base Station Network
  • Familiar with Trimble GPS equipment, in particular Trimble R8 and R10 GPS receivers with Trimble TSC3 Data collector running Trimble Access Software. Also familiar with Trimble S6 Robotic Total Stations
