The Opportunity: McElhanney is seeking a Junior Civil Engineering Technologist to join our team in Edmonton, AB. This role is ideal for someone looking to grow their highway construction materials engineering experience by working on both field and laboratory testing projects, and potentially assist other divisions including Rural / Urban Transportation and Municipal. This position will work closely with our Civil Engineering teams to deliver construction quality control and quality assurance services. What You’ll Be Doing: Working as a materials testing technician in a multi-discipline team of highly skilled. engineers, technicians, surveyors, and drafters to provide excellent service to our clients. Conducting laboratory soil testing including wash sieve analysis, modified and standard proctors. Conducting laboratory asphalt testing including Marshall density, asphalt content and sieve analysis. Conducting field compaction testing using a nuclear densometer. Timely preparation of inspection and investigative reports. Coordinate with other team members to ensure schedules, budgets and quality standards are achieved. Liaise with contractor and affected stakeholders. Assist with other technical tasks including survey layout. Salary Range: $51,000 - $76,000. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate. What You’ll Bring: Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology from an accredited post-secondary institution with 0-3 years of related work experience. Applicants not having a diploma will be considered depending on prior relevant experience. 1-2 years of prior experience with asphalt construction will be an asset. 1-2 years of prior experience with earthworks/aggregate/concrete construction and an interest in construction technology would be considered an asset, but not required. Construction inspection and / or survey experience is an asset. Knowledge of Alberta Transportation (AT), Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) testing methods would be considered an asset. Physical ability to lift heavy equipment, willing to work in various environmental conditions with varied terrain, able to work in wildlife populated areas and willing to work in remote areas, when needed. Good attitude and willingness to work cooperatively as a team player. Strong communication skills and leadership capabilities. Ability to travel to remote sites and work away from home for extended periods of time. Ability to work without supervision as well as within a busy and close-knit team environment.
