The Department of Studio Arts in the Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment in Art History with an Indigenous focus at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2024, subject to final budgetary approval.
You will instruct students in art history and art theory courses; develop and teach a course on Indigenous art and art history in addition to teaching existing courses as per the Academic Calendar; develop new courses relevant to your area of expertise; provide learning activities that stimulate student involvement and encourage critical thinking and discussion; provide concrete, constructive, respectful, and actionable feedback to students; maintain competencies in the subject area and currency in instructional methodologies through professional associations and professional development; maintain an active research and/or creative activity practice (such as academic research, community-based activity, curatorial practice, and/or research-creation); participate in curriculum development and implementation; make significant contributions to the design and delivery of curriculum; mentor students; create and maintain a pedagogical vision for all art history courses within the program in consultation with the Studio Arts program; foster interdisciplinary approaches; and, serve on University-wide, Faculty, and Departmental committees as needed.
You will hold a Ph.D. in Art History, Indigenous Studies, Cultural Studies, or a relevant area of expertise. Consideration will also be given to ABD candidates with a clear timeline to completion as well as those with Master-level credentials. You will demonstrate a primary commitment to undergraduate teaching; strengths in Indigenous art history, art theory, visual culture studies, and/or material culture studies; an ability to teach a variety of art history subjects at multiple levels in the curriculum, from 100- to 400-level courses and seminars; and, an understanding of Indigenous art and art history, as well as relevant cultural histories, issues, methodologies and/or theories. You will also demonstrate an ongoing research and/or creative activity program that includes one or more of the following: publishing, curating, research-creation, institutional or cross-institutional collaboration, or other disciplinary modes of knowledge mobilization.
You should submit a cover letter (with competition number stated), curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy (~1000 words), teaching dossier (including sample course outlines, student projects, and recent teaching evaluations), statement of research interests (~1000 words), and sample of scholarly work, community-based, curatorial, and/or research-creation work.
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted by the Department Chair to provide three (3) letters of reference sent directly from referees and copies of official transcripts sent directly from the institutions where you completed your degrees.
