Position type: Full time, exempt, 12-month position

Salary: Based on experience

Reports directly to: Middle and Upper School Division Director

Antilles School is an independent coeducational day school located on St. Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands. Antilles enrolls approximately 400 students in a toddler program through grade 12.

Position Overview

The Assistant Director of Middle and Upper School works closely with the Director of Middle and Upper School to ensure that the mission and vision of Antilles School is being fully implemented. The assistant director is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day operations of the school as well as providing support to all school constituents. Key initiatives include supporting the professional growth of teaching faculty, program and curriculum development, student character development and accountability, and engaging in partnership with the parents and guardians of the students. Ideal candidates will demonstrate expertise and experience in leading pedagogical approaches, cultivating engaging differentiated learning environments, demonstrating an innovative approach to professional development, exceptional interpersonal skills, and a joyous and uplifting attitude.

  • Supporting an environment focused on inclusion and belonging and implementing practices that lead to a more equitable, restorative, and anti-biased school environment.
  • Enhancing the curricular program with best practices in student-centered instruction and scheduling and innovative approaches to learning.
  • Collaborating with faculty who are committed to teaching in a student-centered environment.
  • Building continuity of experience for students and families who transition between divisions and maximizing the benefits of the continuum of a PreK- Grade 12 program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supports student culture, access and belonging, and designs student life programs aligned with the Schools’ mission and vision.
  • Provides day-to-day support for faculty to craft forward-thinking and reflective learning environments
  • Fosters a culture of partnership between the School and families/guardians, serving as a support liaison between the two.
  • Collaborates and communicates with the Student Support Team and families to develop individualized behavior and/or academic support plans when needed.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Teaching and Learning to lead professional learning opportunities, develop professional learning resources and keep faculty informed of relevant opportunities to ensure Antilles School remains a community of professional growth.
  • Oversees the coordination of student life programming, assists in the planning and the presentation of school assemblies and programs and maintains a comprehensive calendar of school events.
  • Supports the admission and re-enrollment activities for the Middle and Upper School and collaborates with the Admission Team to coordinate activities that introduce new students and families to Antilles School.
  • Attends Middle and Upper School community events, including athletic events, arts performances, and other extracurricular activities and celebrations of accomplishments of the students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Educational Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in educational leadership or related field preferred.

  • Deep knowledge of what are developmentally appropriate needs and behaviors of students in middle and upper school. Supervisory and coaching experience with teachers, and experience articulating and addressing the strengths and challenges evident through classroom observation and other feedback.
  • Superb communication skills, in writing, in front of groups, in relationships with others and as a team leader.
  • A commitment to the continued work of improving the School’s diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and practices.
  • Experience or demonstrated knowledge of appropriate resource programs and services for students with mild to moderate learning differences.
  • At least 5 years of teaching or relevant experience.
