About the Role
Reporting to the Chief Operating Engineer with frequent interaction with the Engineering Manager, the Assistant Chief Operating Engineer is responsible for operations, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, equipment modifications and repairs for the powerhouse and associated equipment. The Assistant Chief Operating Engineer will facilitate the safe and effective operation of Canada Royal Milk’s powerhouse in accordance with TSSA regulations. The Assistant Chief Operating Engineer will be backup to the Chief Operating Engineer as necessary.
The Assistant Chief Operating Engineer will assist in the coordination of activities of the powerhouse and utilities systems. A proven leader, the Assistant Chief Engineer ensures all activities are done safely and respect all food safety and quality standards while maintaining a good working environment.
The Assistant Chief Engineer will be involved in preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, equipment modifications and repairs. A high degree of motivation and initiative with a proven ability to positively work in a team setting is required for the role. Candidates should have the flexibility to meet the needs of a 24 hour continuous operation.
Job Requirements
Key Duties and Responsibilities
1. Regular duties include, but are not limited to: operation of power plant and associated equipment, preventative/corrective/demand maintenance, troubleshooting, identifying areas of improvement, performing routine water analysis, repairs and inspections for the facility – equipment, systems, areas – as per Technical Safety and Standards Authority (TSSA) regulations
2. Operates equipment and systems under the Powerhouse jurisdiction including, but not limited to: boiler & water treatment, compressed air system, wastewater treatment, refrigeration system, HVAC equipment
3. Utilizes computerized maintenance management systems
4. Analyzes and records operational documentation and metrics
5. Provides guidance to apprentices, labourers, maintenance assistants or other assigned help
6. Performs emergency duties, if required
7. Ensures compliance with all regulatory and code requirements
8. Liaises with regulatory agencies under the direction of the Chief Operating Engineer as required, ie: TSSA
9. Acts as a backup for the Waste Water Treatment Plant and covers shifts when necessary
10. Adheres to health, safety, Quality Assurance and security expectations at all times
11. In coordination with the Chief Operating Engineer, assist with managing and overseeing the preventative maintenance and efficient operation of the Powerhouse.
12. Participates in the development of maintenance programs, work schedules, and maintains records as required
13. Provide leadership and supervision to staff by providing work direction, performance feedback, and recommendations for training and development;
14. Promote a positive working environment, including continuously improving/maintaining the team culture and establishing high levels of employee involvement;
15. Maintains & operates plant as per Technical Safety and Standards Authority (TSSA) regulations
16. Ensure OSHA regulations and Quality Assurance protocols are fully complied with
17. Analyze and record instrument readings and equipment malfunction
18. Troubleshoot, perform corrective action or minor repairs as required
19. Maintain daily log of operation, maintenance and safety activities
20. All other duties as assigned
Working Conditions
The standard office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. Most of the work occurs during regular weekday office hours. However, as an international company with frequent interaction with head office, hours of work involved may vary to accommodate differences in time zones. Flexible hours are required and may include evening and week-end hours.
This job operates in office and food manufacturing setting. Travel may be required, both within Canada and internationally.
