Position Purpose

The Academic Advising and Career Specialist oversees advising and career services provided by the Centre for Academic Excellence (the Centre) for all students in Undergraduate and Graduate/Seminary programs. They coordinate initiatives related to working with students who are deemed to be academically at-risk and develop strategies towards their improvement. They also work with all students in the area of academic advising, course planning, learning strategies and study skill training, and coordinate the Undergraduate Midterm Report. This individual is also responsible for supporting and providing services related to career advising in the Centre. This includes resume and cover letter consultations, vocational counselling, and networking with prospective employers.

Primary Responsibilities

Academic Advising

  • Oversee daily operations of academic advising in the Centre
  • Improve and design academic advising systems related to progress reports, appointments, and follow-up on concerns
  • Oversee the Midterm Report for undergraduate students
  • Collaborate with faculty on best practices related to academic advising in their discipline
  • Advise, monitor, and approve course registration for students who are deemed academically at-risk
  • Investigate and respond to individual academic concerns presented by faculty or staff
  • Respond to student inquiries on matters related to academic advising and study skill training
  • Plan and facilitate seminars to the student community
  • Plan in-class seminars in coordination with the Faculty
  • Participate in orientation activities and campus-wide events
  • Recommend and train students on useful study strategies through meetings and seminars
  • Oversee and administer learning style inventories
  • Build strategies on how students can achieve academic goals
  • Manage the Academic Advising and Career Services website, update and grow resources
  • Collaborate with Centre for Academic Excellence staff to improve academic support campus-wide
  • Assist Accessibility Services in securing student note takers
  • Assist Accessibility Services in scheduling and proctoring tests and exams
  • Collaborate with the Director of the Centre on decisions and follow-up related to academic probation and suspension
  • Coordinate student academic appeals
  • Represent the Centre at Tyndale events
  • Oversee daily operations of career advising in the Centre
  • Plan and facilitate career seminars to the student community
  • Plan in-class career seminars in coordination with the Faculty
  • Oversee and administer learning style inventories
  • Build strategies on how students can achieve career goals
  • Advise students on resume and cover letter best practices
  • Develop and maintain career services by networking with organizations and key Tyndale personnel
  • Advise students who are seeking to understand their vocation and future career goals
  • Advise students on post-graduation career and educational opportunities
  • Maintain Employer Profile section of the Centre’s website
  • Coordinate and host campus job fairs
  • Liaise with graduate schools visiting campus

Position Qualifications

Education

  • Undergraduate degree from post-secondary program
  • Degree or diploma in English, Communications, or Psychology, preferred.
  • Physical and/or mental health first aid certification, preferred

Experience

  • 2 years related experience
  • Ministry or counselling experience, preferred
  • Knowledge of Tyndale policies and programs, preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communications skills, both oral and written
  • The ability to take initiative and work in a deadline oriented multitasking environment
  • Ability to multi-task and respond to a high volume of requests

Physical and Mental Demands

  • General office environment and equipment; May be noisy at times
  • Moderate – high level of stress. May result from students responding to poor academic performance, recommended or mandatory referrals from faculty or staff, dissatisfaction with a professor. Respond to inquiries with a high degree of patience and diplomacy.

Duties and responsibilities that do not constitute a major change may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of the supervisor either orally or in writing.

Salary Range

$45,000 to $54,000
