Job Description

Job Summary: In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. The 4th Class Maintenance Engineer maintains, repairs and modifies the steam distribution system, steam condensate system, medical air/vacuum systems, mechanical building systems and sterilizers at a 4th Class Power Engineer’s level in conformance with accepted regulatory codes, WorkSafeBC regulations and established Hospital policies and procedures.

Duties/Accountabilities:

Liaises with Steam and Mechanical Systems Supervisor as required and receives direction concerning maintenance and building systems operational strategies associated with steam distribution system, steam condensate system, medical air/vacuum systems, mechanical building systems and sterilizers as dictated by the daily needs of the Hospital user groups in the provision of patient care.

Reviews assigned work request and schedules daily tasks by consulting with end users for access to work area in allotted time. Determines necessary materials, tools and equipment required to perform such tasks. Refers to blueprints and shop drawings to minimize operating impact on the end users prior to any work start. Ensures all work assignments are executed in conformance with current regulatory codes, WorkSafeBC regulations and established Hospital standards while maintaining a clean work space.

Performs service, installation/alterations and repair work on steam production/distribution systems relating to process piping, isolating valves, pressure reducing valves, safety valves, pneumatic and electric motorized control valves, boilers and auxiliary equipment, chemical feed piping and pumps, radiators, coils, tube bundles and heat exchangers, sterilizers, steam traps and flow meters.

Performs service, installation/alterations and repair work on condensate return piping systems including piping installation and modification, repair and replacement of condensate isolating valves, check valves, strainers, receivers and associated condensate pumping units, and flow meters.

Performs service, installation/alterations and repair work on HVAC equipment relating to installation or repair of air handling unit heating and cooling coils, control valves, chilled water and hot water circulating pumps, cooling towers and associated chemical feed equipment and heat exchangers.

Performs service, installation/alterations and repair work on various closed and open water loop systems such as hot water heating, chilled and condenser water systems. This includes distribution piping, motorized and pneumatic control valves, chemical injection and circulating pumps plus heat exchangers.

Performs inspections and maintenance on the Hospital’s medical air compressors/driers, medical vacuum pumps as well as their associated pipe distribution system.

Performs regular maintenance and inspections on all of the auxiliary power diesel generator engine sets and associated fuel oil storage and delivery equipment.

Performs regular maintenance and inspections on instrument air compressors, air receivers, associated piping and their filtration systems.

Investigate trouble calls received by the Department associated with areas of responsibilities and provide resolution to such calls in a timely manner.

Performs maintenance, repairs and inspections on steam appliances such as but not limited to sterilizers, glass washers, cage washers, stills, cart washers, pasteurizers and bed pan washers.

Performs preventive maintenance tasks as generated by the computerized maintenance management system and assigned by the Steam and Mechanical Supervisor in all areas of responsibilities plus completes historical information associated with these tasks prior to submission to the maintenance data entry clerk.

Be able to read and interpret mechanical engineering drawings and specifications as they relate to the steam/mechanical trade disciplines with the view to provide feedback and recommendations to the Steam and Mechanical Supervisor on any system modifications or enhancements.

Maintains an inventory of supplies, equipment, and tools; evaluates/recommends purchase of related equipment and supplies to Steam and Mechanical Supervisor.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Education, Training and Experience Graduation from a recognized program in power engineering plus two (2) years recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Certificate of competency as a 4th Class Power Engineer.
